Dr. James C. Dobson, one of the great Christian statesmen of our time, passed away yesterday at the age of 89.
Dr. Dobson was the founder of Focus on the Family and a warrior for righteousness. He defended the lives of unborn children with a passion and fought to preserve God’s design for the family. He never shrank from speaking the truth and was totally committed to the Word of God. I had the honor of meeting him on several occasions and he was very much a mentor to me as I listened to him regularly on the radio.
While he was not an ordained minister, I cannot help but think of what Jesus said about John the Baptist: “He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.” (John 5:35) He was a pioneering giant of our time. We who come behind him have our own path to tread out, but James Dobson was the right man at the right time and no one will fill his shoes.
America and the body of Christ owe a great debt of gratitude to Dr. James Dobson. He has “ fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith!” I have no doubt that he now wears the crown of righteousness which the Lord had laid up for him. He has most assuredly heard his Savior say, “ Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord!”
Let us pray for his beloved wife Shirley and the family he leaves to mourn his passing. If we who admired him from a distance will miss him, how much more they who knew him daily and loved him intimately.
Dr. “Jim” Dobson – our friend, our brother in Christ, and spiritual mentor for millions. Rest in peace my friend. We will continue the fight you so bravely led, until we meet you again.
